Despite the fact that the transport industry is regularly the focus of attention regarding CO2 emissions, it is Ewals Cargo Care’s opinion that cost-conscious transportation and environmental initiatives go hand in hand.

Almost all efficiency improvements are aimed at reducing “waste” in the logistics chain, for example the reduction of empty kilometres, lower fuel consumption, better utilisation of the loading capacity, minimising road transport by shipping on long ferry connections, and the use of lower cost rail solutions.

Some facts:

Each week ECC has sixteen own block trains operating between the Benelux/Ruhr Region and northern Italy with on average 40 units each with 25 tonnes of freight. On an annual basis this removes 35,000 lorries movements are taken from the road and 1,400 million tonne kilometres are sent by rail over distances of at least 1,000 km.

The introduction of the successful Mega concept has significantly cut the number of road trips between the UK, Scandinavia and the continent. Enormous savings have been achieved for the car industry moving bulky lightweight components in modular returnable packaging. The number of transport movements that ECC has reduced between the UK and the continent is 20,000 annually. The fact that the Megatrailer has now been promoted as the standard in the car industry further illustrates the impact of this innovation.

Since 2004 ECC has accordingly been in possession of the ISO 14001 environment certificate.
