Carglass Improves Efficiency with a Cross-Border LHV Solution Across Four Countries
Ewals Cargo Care and Carglass® launch a smarter LHV solution across Europe
Meet Carglass®
Carglass is a leading specialist in vehicle glass repair and replacement, operating across Europe. With a strong focus on efficiency, reliability and customer service, the company relies on a well-structured supply chain to ensure timely delivery of products to its network.
To support its operations and sustainability ambitions, Carglass continuously explores ways to optimise transport flows, reduce emissions and improve efficiency across its European distribution network.
Ensuring Efficient and Scalable Transport Operations
As transport volumes grew, Carglass sought new ways to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact. One opportunity was the use of Longer and Heavier Vehicle (LHV) combinations, enabling more goods to be transported in a single trip.
However, implementing this solution was far from straightforward. Crossborder LHV transport requires strict compliance with national regulations, infrastructure limitations, and driver certification requirements. Each country operates under different rules, making it challenging to establish a seamless, compliant transport route.
This required months of preparation, coordination and regulatory alignment across multiple countries, involving authorities, infrastructure planning and driver readiness.
Key Challenges
-
Navigating complex and varying regulations across multiple countries
-
Ensuring compliance with road restrictions and infrastructure limitations
-
Securing approvals and certifications for cross-border LHV operations
-
Maintaining reliable and efficient transport flows during implementation
Creating Value Through Cross-Border LHV Solutions
To address these challenges, Ewals Cargo Care worked closely with Carglass to explore the feasibility and implementation of LHV combinations. This collaborative approach focused on combining operational efficiency with regulatory compliance and long-term scalability.
The solution involved detailed route design, regulatory alignment, and driver
training to ensure safe, compliant operations. Extensive research identified
routes that meet national requirements while maintaining efficiency from the
Carglass European Distribution Centre to key destinations.
How Ewals Cargo Care supported Carglass
-
Investigating the feasibility of LHV transport across multiple countries
-
Designing compliant routes aligned with national regulations
-
Coordinating approvals and agreements with authorities
-
Certifying and training drivers for LHV operations
-
Ensuring safe, efficient and scalable cross-border transport
In 2024, a key milestone was achieved when the Belgian government approved a designated route connecting the distribution centre to the highway, enabling LHV operations to begin.
From there, the solution expanded across borders, creating a seamless transport a corridor from Belgium to Denmark, via Netherlands and Germany
A Partnership Built on Innovation and Collaboration
The success of this project is rooted in the strong collaboration between Carglass and Ewals Cargo Care. Close communication, shared objectives and a willingness to innovate enabled both teams to overcome regulatory and operational challenges.
What defines the partnership
-
Close collaboration on strategic and operational challenges
-
Joint focus on innovation and efficiency improvements
-
Strong alignment on sustainability and performance goals
-
Continuous coordination across multiple countries and stakeholders
-
This cross-border cooperation required alignment not only between the two
-
companies but also with national authorities and regulatory bodies.
-
The result is a new benchmark for LHV transport across Europe.
Delivering Measurable Results
The implementation of cross-border LHV transport has delivered significant operational and sustainability benefits for Carglass. By increasing load capacity and reducing the number of trips, the solution enhances both efficiency and environmental performance.
Key results:
-
Increased load capacity through LHV combinations.
-
Reduced number of trips, improving operational efficiency.
-
Lower fuel consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions.
-
Seamless cross-border transport across four countries.
-
Improved logistics performance and delivery reliability.
Key benefits of LHV transport
-
Higher efficiency: transporting more goods per trip.
-
Cost savings: fewer trips reduce operational costs.
-
Lower emissions: optimised transport supports sustainability goals.
-
Enhanced logistics flows: improved planning and delivery consistency.
This solution sets a new benchmark for cross-border LHV transport in Europe and demonstrates what is possible when innovation, collaboration and precise execution come together.
