Double manned crews: The power of partnerships for moving our goods

Picture this: a husband and wife, or perhaps two close friends, together on the road, behind the wheel of our truck. They’re not just sharing the same profession; it is a shared lifestyle, and these couples form a unique crew of our driver population.

One of the most significant advantages of having a double manned crew on the truck is the ability to maintain continuous operation without the need for extended breaks. This translates to faster delivery times and increased productivity. However, spending together many hours in the truck fosters a deep sense of cooperation. They need to learn to communicate effectively, anticipate each other’s needs, and work seamlessly together.

Roxana and Alin Kiss are one of those double manned couples who are working for us. First Alin started working for us and decided afterwards to also bring his wife on the truck and they joined Ewals since.

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we usually think of love and romance. But is this intensive collaboration taking them only to the next destination in business or also in life? We asked Roxana and Alin some questions about their partnership in business and personal life.

Roxana and Alin, how do you divide tasks and responsibilities when you are at work?

Alin: We try to split the responsibilities equally, but we also have specific roles.

Roxana: Indeed, we have developed our own routines to streamline our workflow, but most of the time this goes naturally, because we know each other so well.

What specific roles do each of you naturally takes on?

Roxana: We have specific roles, for example I like to do the cooking, the cleaning, the document handling, and my husband is doing most of the hard labor (putting straps, pulling the curtain etc.) Moreover, sometimes he does not even let me participate at his manly activities.

Alin: but Roxana is much better in handling the documents. She’s very precise in handling the details that are necessary for this task.

Handling conflicts is a crucial aspect of maintaining a successful partnership. But spending extended periods together in the confined space of a truck cab can lead do disagreements and conflicts.

How do you handle disagreements or conflicts at work?

Roxana: Usually I am hotheaded and when he sees me like that, he is always more forgiving and understanding – even though the truths is on his side.

Alin: I choose my battles, and if it is not worth the fighting, I leave it and I rather choose for peace in the cabin.

Roxana: And if it really needs to be talked over, we will do so at another suitable time.

Keep talking seems key in every relation, but what strategies do you use to maintain effective communication both in and out of the workplace?

Alin: The strategy that we apply is to not have a discussion when we are angry or frustrated. We wait until we calm down and approach each other when we are calmer.

How do you navigate situations where personal issues affect your professional dynamic and visa versa?

Roxana: We are lucky, and we did not have such serios situations that could affect our work relationship and vice versa.

Alin: Sometimes, taking a short break from each other can provide us already the space we need to cool off. For example: dividing tasks gives us that opportunity. That helps us through the ups and downs of life.

How do you celebrate milestones and successes, both personal and professional?

Roxana: We like spending time and celebrating with friends. And just because of our long hours on the road, we prioritize maintaining our friendships.

Alin: Of course, we are far away from our family, friends and loved once, so that makes it sometimes challenging to celebrate.

Roxana: We have a strong bond with our family and friends. We spend a lot of time on the phone and social media, but when we are home all our time is dedicated to our family and friends.

Do you have any traditions or rituals related to acknowledging achievements?

Alin: We have specific traditions and rituals. We celebrate on the spot when we have the right feeling, we have something to celebrate and of course if we have the time to do so.

Alin and Roxana recognize their unique lifestyle as a driving couple, but in this resilient partnership lies the power of family and make differences works.
