The creation of the Mega Trailer

The logistics industry is the backbone of global trade, and among the various innovations that have transformed this sector over its history, the MegaTrailer stands out as a key one. This piece of equipment, designed to maximize cargo capacity and streamline transportation, offers maximum capacity and features an array of adaptations that make it indispensable in modern logistics.

The challenge for the industry

In the late 1980s, previous design trailers, known as Swan-neck trailers, were falling short in terms of volume and flexibility for the increasing requirements of modern companies. So, the logistics industry's challenge was creating a trailer that could significantly increase the volume of goods transported, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing cost.

In addition, any new design would also ideally allow for the Ro-Ro (Roll-on, Roll-off) transport method, a very efficient and much-used form of transport where trailers are pulled onto a ship and then pulled off at the loading port. During this, the truck and driver do not accompany the trailer; a new pair awaits the trailer at the destination.

Partnership with the automotive industry for creating the Mega Trailer

The answer to the automotive industry's struggles was the MegaTrailer. It was co-developed in the 1990s by Ewals Cargo Care in collaboration with the European automotive industry. The MegaTrailer design was a trailer with a larger internal height and volume, capable of carrying up to 100 cubic meters of cargo, and a 25% increase over the typical swan neck trailers. The trailer's design also facilitated the Ro-Ro requirement, allowing logistics providers to plan trailer and truck movements more efficiently and reduce costs.

Its introduction had a profound impact on the logistics industry as a whole.
It did this by:

  • By increasing the volume of goods that can be transported in a single trip. The MegaTrailer has helped reduce transportation costs and improve efficiency, particularly in an era where supply chain optimization is crucial for maintaining competitive advantage.
  • Utilising a design that allows for greater flexibility in loading/unloading. This significantly reduced turnaround times at warehouses and distribution centers. This efficiency translates into faster delivery times and improved service levels for customers.

We continue to innovate

Since its introduction, we have not rested on our laurels, and the company continues to innovate, developing new solutions to meet the evolving needs of the logistics industry. One such innovation is the Mega Huckepack XLS trailer, which builds on the success of the original MegaTrailer by offering enhanced safety and efficiency features, as well as Huckepack portability, allowing the trailer to be loaded onto Trains for cheaper long-distance land transport.

The MegaHuckepack XLS trailer is now perfect for modern multimodal transport, meaning it can be easily transferred between road, rail, and sea transport modes. This flexibility is crucial for optimizing supply chains and reducing the environmental impact of freight transportation.
